Hunting Rifles -
My Style
I am currently in full swing of whitetail deer hunting season. Today I thought I would go over some options for deer hunting rifles. I have a little different style for hunting.
When selecting a hunting rifle there are many factors to consider. Most go for a large powerful caliber. Some popular options are .308, 30-06, 22-250, .270, .243, and .223. The smaller of the calibers are generally what youth use when hunting.
My Rifles
I have a different approach for hunting, I choose to use rifles that I have rater than buying a rifle for one use only, hunting. This year I am using my AK-47 and AR-15 for hunting. Most underestimate the potential of these rifles, but they are a multipurpose battle rifle. In this instance I am battling deer.
I have an AK-47 that I shoot as frequently as possible. I am proficient with the AK, I am familiar with the AK, so why not further my familiarity with the AK by using it for hunting? The 7.26×39 is a powerful enough round to eat a vehicle alive, why is it not powerful enough to take down an animal? Several countries military feel it is powerful enough to stop a human target. I believe it will drop a deer quickly and efficiently.
I also have an AR-15 with red dot sight that I use frequently. Many use a .223 for deer hunting. There is not that much difference in the rifles other than accessory features, like grips, adjustable stocks, and magazine capacity. The .223 or 5.56×45 are commonly used military calibers. The .223 should have no problem dropping a deer quickly.
Being proficient with a firearm increases your accuracy and gives you more confidence when shooting. To me using a firearm that you shoot frequently and are familiar with will increase your chances of getting that big buck you have been searching for. Plus it’s just plain fun hunting with an AK-47 or AR-15.
What do you use for hunting? Have you ever used an AR or AK for hunting? Were you successful? Share your opinions in the comments below. If you got a big buck (or little one) feel free to share a picture.

I have hunted whitetail deer with my AK many times, the weapon is much easier to move through brush with and is alot easier to do drives with than some of my other high caliber long guns.
I would give one piece of advice though…. Aim for the head or neck of the animal or you will need to be doing some serious tracking. The AR and AK don’t have quite the knock down power that your trusty old 30 06 has, but a well placed round in the head or neck gets the job done just fine.
Yes, I have used one of my AR15′s to hunt with and have killed deer with it. Shot placement is the key to any successful hunt. When I worked on a farm that had a deer predation problem, I used my .22 bolt action rifle to kill deer by the dozen. Again, shot placement has to be right.
A .22 or any other round to the brain will put a deer down with -0- tracking necessary. These Fudds that shoot a .300 Magnum and shoot the deer in the lip are the ones that think you need a large caliber rifle to hunt with.
My son shot a nice 8 point buck with AR 223 went down on the spot. Accurate as all get out.
